For months, the Biden administration has been extending a federal eviction moratorium to protect tenants struggling to pay their rent during the pandemic, but now, the eviction moratorium is over.

The Supreme Court ruled last Thursday that the CDC has overstepped its authority and that in order for the moratorium to continue Congress would need to reauthorize it, but that is unlikely.

The White House says it’s working with states on solutions for hundreds of thousands, potentially millions of tenants across the country who are now at risk of losing their homes. In the state of New York, there are  more than 830,000 households behind on their rent.

Peter Hepburn, assistant professor of Sociology at Rutgers University-Newark, and part of the Eviction Lab at Princeton University and Cea Weaver, campaign coordinator of Housing Justice for All in New York, joined to break down the crises that could unfold in different cities and look at the work that housing advocates are doing to help tenants in the weeks ahead.
